Game Focus: Endless Runners

The first in a series of who knows how many articles focusing on games for the iPhone and iPad.

Anyone that knows me (or has been following this blog) knows that I'm pretty gaga over my geeky toys. In particular my Apple stuff. With summer officially upon us I started thinking about some of the games I tend to waste my time with and decided to toss together a list (or several) of some of my favorite ones. Since it's a rather long list, I'm going to break it down into types.

First up, the Endless Runner.

Endless Runner Games are those in which you run (although sometimes drive, fly, jump or even swim) until you die. The fun in these games tends to go towards the racking up of points for bragging rights rather than any real exercising of the mind. Many Endless Runners include two and even three different scorings with a main coin, a secondary gem and scores for achieving goals (such as going X distance in one run). Many of them also include powerups which can randomly appear in the game and give you such skills as blasting super fast over a long distance, magnetic collection of coins or gems or even shielding you from obstacles. These powers can often be enhanced with the in game coins for long duration and some very special powers have to be activated via similar purchase before they go into the random lottery. And they can generally be classified in three groups

The Front Runner
Front Runners are those games in which you are running forward with the 'camera' hanging out somewhere a bit behind your player. Your moves tend to be limited to jumps, slides, dodges and turns.

 Temple Run
Temple Run 2
Temple Run Oz
Temple Run Brave

Agent Dash

Despicable Me Minion Rush
Sonic Dash
  Monsters University: Catch Archie

The Side Runner
Side Runners are games where you are running across the zone with the camera to one side giving the effect that you are running from the left side of the device to the right side. For a long time this was the main mode for old school video games. With Side Runners your only moves tend to be jumps and punches and/or shooting.

Monster Dash

Zombie Tsunami
Jetpack Joyride
Canabalt
Mega Run
Run Like Hell
Stickman Skater
Grim Joggers

An honorable mention goes to

Tiny Wings

which is not a true endless runner since there is a timer, but it's still a lot of fun and if played well you can go for quite a length of time before that timer (which adjusts to how well you are playing) runs out.

The Vertical Runner
Calling these runners is a bit of a misnomer as the main move is actually jumping. But otherwise they fit the bill. Some are strictly jumping and dodging, some you get to shoot etc things.

Doodle Jump

Sonic Jump

Mega Jump
Sir Lovalot
The Incident
Jump O'Clock
